Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi graduated from the National Defence Academy with the award of the “President’s Gold Medal” conferred to the “Best all-round Cadet” of the passing out course. He was subsequently commissioned in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy on 01 Jul 85. 
Post commission, the Flag Officer was a part of the commissioning crew of INS Cuddalore as a non - specialist Gunnery Officer. He subsequently specialised in Anti-Submarine Warfare in 1991, standing first in the course. Post his specialisation, he served onboard IN Ships Himgiri, Agray and Ganga as the ASW Officer and subsequently as an Instructor at the ASW School and as the Executive and Prinicipal Warfare Officer onboard INS Khukri (Missile Corvette).  During his tenure onboard INS Khukri, the ship was awarded the “Most Spirited Ship” trophy. His Command tenures afloat include INS Nashak (Missile Vessel), INS Magar {Landing Ship Tank (Large)} and INS Talwar (Frigate). During his Command of INS Nashak and INS Talwar, the ships were awarded the “Best Ship” trophies. His Command assignments ashore include Command of the National Coast Guard, Mauritius from Apr 2003 to Apr 2005 where he was commended by the Commissioner of Police, Mauritius, and, as the Commandant, Naval Academy and Commanding Officer INS Mandovi from Jun 2007 to Jun 2009. It was during his tenure as the Commandant Naval Academy, Mandovi, Goa, that the last batch of cadets graduated from Mandovi in May 2009 and the entire mandate of training shifted from Naval Academy, Goa to the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala in Jun 2009. The Flag Officer is the only officer who has the rare distinction of Commanding the Indian Naval Academy twice, albeit in different ranks.  
His staff tenures ashore were appointments tenanted as the Staff Officer (ASW) at the Local Work-up Team, West, Joint Director at Directorate of Personnel at Naval Headquarters, Naval Advisor to the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Senior Directing Staff at the Naval War College, Mumbai and Principal Director Staff Requirements at Naval Headquarters.
On promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral in Feb 2015, he discharged his responsibilities as the Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resources Development), and thereafter as the Flag Officer Sea Training in Oct 16. He subsequently Commanded the Western Fleet as the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Fleet from Jan 2018 to Mar 2019. 
On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral on 27 Mar 19, the Flag Officer assumed charge of Naval Operations as the Director General Naval Operations. He is a recipient of the Nao Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) in 2011 and the Ati Vishist Seva Medal in 2019. 
The Flag Officer is a graduate from the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington having stood first and awarded the “Scudder Medal”, the erstwhile College of Naval Warfare, Karanja, where his dissertation was recognised with the award of the Commander-in- Chief Silver Medal, and the prestigious National Defence College, New Delhi. The Flag Officer holds the qualification of MPhil in Strategic and Security Studies from two Universities.
The Flag Officer is an athlete and is a keen Squash, Golf and Basketball player. He also enjoys music.  He is married to Mrs Madhumati Hampiholi.  Their only son Mayur is a post graduate of Data Science and Engineering from BITS Hyderabad and presently working as a ‘Lead Data Scientist’ with a Travel & Hospitality firm, M/s Goibibo at Bengaluru. Mayur tied the nuptial knot with Shreya on 13 Feb 2021. Shreya an architect by profession, is a graduate of National Institue of Design, Ahmedabad and is working as a 'Product Designer' with Intuit at Bangaluru.
