The  Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta-2016​ commenced with an Opening Ceremony  at the picturesque Ettikulum Bay at Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala on 06 December ​20​16.  The event, with 23 competing teams from Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, United States of America, Venezuela, ​two Indian academy teams from INA and NDA Khadakvasla and one observing team from Indonesia, was inaugurated by Vice Admiral SV Bhokare, Commandant, INA at an impressive opening ceremony. Special invitees, participants and their country coaches/officials and senior N​aval officers were present on the occasion.
The Regatta being conducted by INA involves races in Laser (Radial) class sailing boats, and are scheduled over four days commencing from 07 December 2016. The course laid out is in keeping with international norms.  The event has become very popular since its inception in 2010. Each team comprises of two boats totalling 54 participants including 10 female participants, who will fiercely compete for the coveted ‘Admiral’s Cup’. 
The ‘Admiral’s Cup’ and the Runners-Up Cup are to be awarded to the top two teams in the championship on the basis of their combined performance of both boats. In addition, individual medals will also be awarded in the men’s and women’s category. The Admiral’s Cup Regatta 2015 was won by US Naval Academy team. This year’s regatta is expected to be more exciting and keenly fought with the highest ever number of countries participating in the event. First time participation of countries like Canada, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal and Singapore has added to the edge of the competition. INA has also invited eminent yachtsmen from all over India, in addition to local schools, colleges and NCC cadets to witness the event. On the side lines of the Admiral’s Cup, kid’s zone, beach volleyball facility, merchandising shop and refreshment counters have also been setup at the venue for the spectators.
